Authorities investigating the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan have extended their search to Georgia as they pursue the fugitive suspect. The gunman, who fled the scene and reportedly boarded a bus out of New York City, remains at large as the investigation enters its fifth day.
Law enforcement sources told CBS News that officers have been deployed to Georgia and along stops on the suspect’s presumed bus route. Despite releasing CCTV footage showing the masked gunman, police have not disclosed the suspect’s identity or possible motive.
Much of the investigation has focused on New York’s Central Park, where the suspect is believed to have fled on a bicycle immediately after the shooting. On Sunday, police continued to search the park’s lake for evidence. A discarded backpack found nearby contained a jacket and Monopoly money but no weapon, according to sources.
After leaving the park on the Upper West Side, the suspect reportedly hailed a taxi, with surveillance images capturing him masked in the back seat en route to the Port Authority bus terminal. Authorities believe he escaped by bus, the same method he used to arrive in the city 10 days prior, traveling on a Greyhound from Atlanta. During his stay in New York, he checked into a hostel, briefly revealing his face to the receptionist—a moment that provided police with their clearest image of the suspect.
Police have yet to determine why Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, was targeted. One theory under consideration is that the shooting was a statement against the healthcare insurance industry. Bullet casings recovered at the scene were inscribed with the words “depose,” “deny,” and “delay”—a possible reference to tactics insurance companies are accused of using to avoid paying claims. These phrases align with the title of a book critical of the industry.
The murder has sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with users sharing stories of their struggles with insurance companies and denials of healthcare coverage.
Brian Thompson’s death has sent shockwaves through his community and the broader industry. As police continue their search, the incident has reignited public discourse about the healthcare system and its impact on Americans’ lives.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
