Oregon Secures College Football Playoff Spot with Big Ten Championship Victory

Oregon’s quest for perfection continues, as the undefeated Ducks clinched their place in the College Football Playoff with a thrilling 45-37 victory over No. 3 Penn State in the Big Ten title game on Saturday night. The No. 1 Ducks (13-0) cemented their top spot in the 12-team playoff field with an explosive performance led by standout wide receiver Tez Johnson.

Johnson had a career-best game, torching the Penn State defense with 11 receptions for 181 yards and a touchdown. His highlight of the night came in the third quarter when quarterback Dillon Gabriel connected with him for a 48-yard catch-and-run touchdown, pushing Oregon’s lead to 38-24.

Although Penn State (11-2) managed to trim the deficit to eight early in the fourth quarter, their two-point conversion attempt fell short. Oregon responded with a methodical, 12-play drive capped by Jordan James’ three-yard touchdown run, consuming nearly seven minutes of game time and restoring a two-score cushion with just over seven minutes remaining.

The Nittany Lions refused to go quietly, narrowing the gap to a single score with 3:41 left on the clock. However, Oregon’s defense held firm. Nikko Reed’s interception of Drew Allar on a deep pass sealed the victory and secured the Ducks’ unblemished record.

Oregon, the lone undefeated team at the top level of college football, has held the No. 1 ranking throughout the College Football Playoff selection process. Their dominance ensures they will face the winner of the No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchup in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. Earlier on Saturday, two-loss Georgia captured the SEC title by defeating Texas, leaving no doubt about Oregon’s position atop the playoff bracket.

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel also shone in the win, solidifying his case as a Heisman Trophy finalist with a stellar performance. The sixth-year signal-caller completed 22 of 32 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns. While Gabriel’s chances of winning the Heisman remain slim against frontrunners like Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, his season has been remarkable enough to earn a trip to New York for the ceremony.

The defeat adds to Penn State coach James Franklin’s struggles against elite competition, marking his 19th loss in 22 games against top-10 opponents while at the helm of the Nittany Lions.

With their unrelenting offense and a perfect record, Oregon has all the momentum heading into the College Football Playoff as they chase their ultimate goal: a national championship.penn
