Disney’s Summer Blockbuster “Deadpool & Wolverine” Pushes Boundaries—but One Joke Was Off-Limits
Disney’s R-rated action-comedy Deadpool & Wolverine dominated the box office this summer, praised for its bold humor and relentless jabs at everything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the actors’ personal lives. The creative team lauded Disney for giving them the freedom to cross lines many would consider taboo. However, there was one joke that Disney drew the line at.
Ryan Reynolds recently revealed that one of Deadpool’s signature fourth-wall-breaking quips didn’t make the final cut. Disney’s For Your Consideration (FYC) portal released the official script, where the original joke appears. In the scene, Deadpool reacts to news of Magneto’s death by breaking into an expletive-laden rant:
“F***! We can’t even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse cock in my throat.”
Director Shawn Levy spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the decision.
“There was only one line in the entire movie that we were asked to change,” Levy said. “Ryan and I made a pact to take that line to the grave. But I will say, the replacement is just as outrageous: a filthy joke about Pinocchio sticking his face up Deadpool’s ass and lying like crazy. When Disney asked for a cleanup, that was Ryan’s idea of ‘cleaner.’ Audacious to the very edge—that’s Ryan Reynolds for you.”
Despite the change, Deadpool & Wolverine retained its signature irreverence, further cementing Deadpool’s status as the most boundary-pushing character in the Marvel universe.
