Within hours of firing fellow Portuguese Paulo Fonseca on Monday after just six months in charge, AC Milan announced that he had hired Sergio Conceicao as their new coach.

“Sergio Paulo Marceneiro da Conceicao has been appointed as the Head Coach of the men’s First Team until 30 June 2026,” Milan said in a statement.

The 50-year-old Conceicao was available after leaving Porto in June of this year after leading the team to three league titles and four Portuguese Cup victories.

Although he has played for Lazio twice, for Parma and Inter Milan from 1998 to 2004, he is familiar with Serie A.

His only head coaching experience outside of Portugal was a season with Nantes, a Ligue 1 team. Conceicao’s ascent to prominence is the result of his exceptional nature.

When he was still a youngster, the 56-time capped winger considered giving up the game after losing his mother, father, and younger brother.

The 51-year-old Fonseca had announced his termination ahead of time as he was leaving the San Siro after his press conference following Sunday’s draw with AS Roma.

The season’s sixth 1-1 tie put Milan in seventh place, eight points behind Lazio in fourth and final Champions League position, and a whopping 13 behind city rivals Inter, who are in third place and vying for the championship.

Milan commended Fonseca for his “excellent professionalism” in a statement. The seven-time European winners Milan have been dealing with erratic play and discontent among their fans.

After constantly pursuing his countryman and star winger Rafael Leao and benching France full-back Theo Hernandez for a teenage academy player in a dreadful goalless draw with Genoa earlier this month, Fonseca has been in open dispute with senior players and questioned the dedication of his team.

The Cubs’ supporters, meanwhile, are on a war footing and attacked the club’s owners on December 21 during a celebration of its 125th birthday. The event was marred by chants calling for the owners, RedBird, a US investment fund, to sell up, as well as the conspicuous absence of Paolo Maldini among the legendary players parading on the pitch.

After that, supporters gathered outside for a private celebration of the anniversary, barring the majority of the players who arrived and holding banners that said, “A club with no ambition, you’re not worthy of our history.”
